CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: ENGAGING IN CULTURAL CONSCIOUSNESS
Culture goes far beyond race, age, or gender. It is the collection of experiences, values, and perspectives that shape who we are. It’s not just about asking “Where are you from?” but about understanding where someone has been, where they are going, and the journey that has shaped their worldview.
This course explores the practice of cultural consciousness; the ability to recognize, respect, and engage with diversity in meaningful ways. We examine six historical forces that have driven cultural diversity across communities: economic opportunity, religious freedom, conflict, environmental factors, security, and symbolism. These forces influence how attitudes and behaviors are formed, and how individuals perceive themselves and others.
Through interactive discussions and real-world examples, participants will learn how cultural assumptions can create misunderstandings, how behaviors considered appropriate in one culture may be offensive in another, and how open-mindedness fosters respect. By sharing experiences and perspectives, we uncover not only our differences but also the surprising common ground that connects us through our core human needs and aspirations.
This course equips participants with tools to build stronger relationships, reduce bias, and create inclusive environments where diversity is seen as a strength rather than a barrier.
