Application of Leadership Concepts

A sustainable organization is constantly seeking individuals within that are willing to take on the challenge of mentoring others in a way that supports the mission of the organization. Throughout my career as a law enforcement and professional development expert, I have studied several theories and principles that challenge my ability to become a more effective leader in a persons professional and personal life. I have had the opportunity during my education to not only enhance my understanding of effective leadership but to simultaneously practice these theories in both my professional career as a Deputy Sheriff and as a business owner of 8 years.

Philosophy of Leadership

I discuss the concept of leadership, highlighting 3 major leadership theories of leadership that have influenced me. I also analyze my own leadership style using several assessments from Northouse’s Leadership text to assess my effectiveness in the leadership approaches. These assessments will assist in describing qualities and characteristics comparable to effective leaders. Lastly, I discuss what effective followership is, why it is an important component of leadership, and how I can enhance my effectiveness as a follower while encouraging the same in others.

Effective People Management

When providing professional development opportunities to various organizations in the topics of workplace culture, I often start with an acknowledgement of who is responsible for meeting whose expectations. Employers often hire people who meeting the expectations of the organization. But where we do not put enough emphasis on is the flip side of what is believed to be a person’s future conduct which is just as equally important. That is ensuring the organization or employer is meeting the expectations of its employees. Part of doing this is vigilance to how we manage the culture of the organization and acknowledging the value of people within the organization. Effective people management ensures that we create a workplace that not only produces a high quality of service to our clients but to ensure that the people producing are thriving and growing as part of an equivalent transaction for their best efforts and contributions to the organization.

Ethical Framework

I describe my own ethical framework while sharing a difficult ethical decision that impacted both my personal and professional life. As I describe this incident, I will discuss how I applied my ethical framework to the situation. Lastly, I assess how I may apply a different or more complex decision-making process in the future to complex ethical issues.

Team Building Projects

The Trust Walk

Our activities committee, led by Nicholas and Scott, introduces the Trust Walk. This group exercise focuses on trusting managers, colleagues, and sometimes even subordinates. This exercise is meant to lead us in ethical decision-making in an effort to maintain our commitment to the organization's core values.

Team Communication

In Brandman University's Oganizational Leadership Team Building course, students demonstrated their understanding of cooperation and the collective philosophy within an organization. Students learned the process of developing a team, its benefits, and the evolution of team formation.

My role in this project was to utilize my web designing and video production skills to assist in the designing of the website created to display our work. Secondly, I had the individual responsibility to take 2 team building activities discussed by the team and transform them into a media production with description. This was a huge task considering the limited time available for me to write a script, storyboard, film, and complete post-production. Thinking outside the cliché use of PowerPoint was a significant risk considering the limited amount of resources and time available. Despite the constraints, we completed our goal, successfully showcasing our work by the deadline and facilitating a discussion with other students who provided feedback to our work. Practicing the concept of forward-thinking, I have since this project done curriculum design, turning the learning activity into a robust ethical decision-making learning activity that is conducted in several presentation topics within my business.

Face to Face activities are effective and bring people closer together. It also shows that the company and management care about employee morale and team success.
